Fulfuldi also kown as Fula, Fulani, Fulah, Pulaar, Pular and French: Peul is spoken as a set of various dialects in a continuum that stretches across some 20 countries in West and Central Africa. Fulfulde is an official language in Senegal (Pulaar), an official lingua franca in Guinea, Senegambia, Maasina, North Eastern Nigeria and Northern Cameroon (Pular), where many speakers are bilingual, and a national language in many African countries, such as Mauritania, Mali, Gambia, Guinea (Conakry), Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon and Niger. Fulfulde is the language of the Fulani people, also known as the Fulbe or Peul. It is spoken by 24 million people. There are several names applied to the language, just as there are to the Fula people. They call their language Pulaar or Pular in the western dialects and Fulfulde in the central and eastern dialects.

There are nine recognized dialects:

fuc – Pulaar (Senegambia, Mauritania)

fuf – Pular (Guinea, Sierra Leone)

ffm – Maasina Fulfulde (Mali)

fue – Borgu Fulfulde (Benin, Togo)

fuh – Western Niger (Burkina, Niger)

fuq – Central–Eastern Niger (Niger)

fuv – Nigerian Fulfulde (Nigeria)

fub – Adamawa Fulfulde (Cameroon, Chad, Sudan)

fui – Bagirmi Fulfulde (CAR)

The words from four dialects of the Western Niger dialect are displayed in this dictionary: Jelgoore, Yaagaare, Gurmaare and Moosiire. The dialect spoken in Cameroon and Burkina Faso, known as Adamawa Fulfulde is generally mutually intelligible with the other dialects, although those common on the extreme west and east of the continent may have difficulty. Work is underway to standardize these dialects. Currently nine translations of the Bible are available in the various dialects.
